Not Just Library

Not Just Library is more than a place for books; it serves as a platform for presenting diverse perspectives and inspiring ideas.

Focusing on reading and design, NJL offers accessible design knowledge and resources for the public. Located in a historic bathhouse, it combines the building’s architectural features with its book collections, providing a quiet and inviting environment for reading. Through exhibitions and events, NJL facilitates dialogue among readers, creators, and design professionals.

⟩ Venue Overview

The library is operated by the Taiwan Design Research Institute and is located in the designated historic site—the Women’s Bathhouse of the former Songshan Tobacco Factory. Redesigned by JC. Architecture & Design and Motif Planning & Design Consultants, the historic space has been transformed into a bright and open environment themed around “soaking in books. ” The venue consists of the BOOK BATH, the BATHHOUSE, and BREATH, making it ideal for hosting talks, courses, workshops, press events, and various presentations.

⟩ BOOK BATH 36 ping (approx. 119 m²)

Formerly the changing room of the Women’s Bathhouse at Songshan Tobacco Factory, this area was reinterpreted by Pocheng Design as a “BOOK BATH,” extending the bathing metaphor into an immersive reading experience. The space accommodates 50–70 people, suitable for press conferences, talks, workshops, and small-scale events.

⟩ BATHHOUSE 30 ping (approx. 99 m²)

This area was originally the main bath space of the Women’s Bathhouse. It retains historical elements from the Japanese colonial period, including a semicircular bathtub, vintage tiles, and a skylight. With its unique historical ambience, the space is well-suited for themed exhibitions, installations, and light refreshment areas.

⟩ BREATH 74 ping (approx. 244 m²)

Located north of the bathhouse, this outdoor area was once an unused open lot. Through the redesign by Motif Planning & Design Consultants, the indoor reading atmosphere is extended outdoors with curated seating and fluid circulation. The result is a tranquil space where greenery and sunlight intertwine, offering visitors a peaceful outdoor reading environment.
